Our city has many assets including its residents; a dedicated city work force; beautiful Lake Erie; parks and walking trails; affordable housing for families and individuals at all stages of life; good schools and a safe, welcoming community.
As a kid, I spent entire summers fishing on Lake Erie and I am proud we have a free boat launch and five lakeshore parks for residents and visitors to enjoy whether fishing, boating, kayaking or just looking out at our spectacular sunsets over the lake.
Our ten neighborhood parks provide play areas for kids, sports fields, picnic and gazebo areas and grills. We have a dog park, water station for cyclists along Lake Road and a skate park.
The Community Center has increasingly become a central gathering place whether for our annual Christmas tree lighting and party in December or year-round programs for seniors and local clubs.
Because we are largely a residential community, city services focus on meeting needs of our homeowners. Since becoming Mayor in 2010, our administration has worked hard to improve our storm water system to reduce flooding of streets, yards and basements. We have accelerated a program to replace storm sewers and street pavement, often through federal and state grants which saves local taxpayer dollars. We reinstituted fall leaf pick up while maintaining branch pick up and snow removal, enhanced by better equipment, often obtained through grants.
The building department which assists homeowners and businesses to ensure their properties are safe, sturdy and meet standards set by city ordinance, is certified by the Ohio Board of Building Standards. Our fire department regularly received high praise for quality service as does our police department, which is moving forward to implement changes to further enhance its effectiveness. The Ohio Auditor has recognized the City with an award of distinction for its clean, accurate audits annually since the inception of the award in 2011.
The amenities and services we provide to residents are delivered by a team of dedicated workers who deserve our appreciation. I’m proud when I get calls from neighboring communities asking how we handle various aspects of service provision. I am particularly proud of residents of this community who reach out to help each other when times are tough. I’m honored to lead this team and to serve as your Mayor.
