Local woman fulfills wish by opening tanning salon

Theresa Buckler Tino recalled how often she drove her three daughters to tanning salons before homecoming, prom and other special events. Back then, she wished there was a local tanning salon that would have made it easier on her hectic schedule and saved her a lot of gas money as well.

Tino has turned that wish into a reality for Sheffield Lake and other nearby residents by opening Erieshore Tanning at 4114 E. Lake Road in Shoreway Shopping Center. “I had an idea that if we had a salon locally then kids could ride bikes or walk to a salon and not take up mom’s time,” the Sheffield Lake resident said, adding she felt strongly that the city needed a tanning salon given people’s increasing interest in her type of service.

For those who want a little, or a lot, extra color, the business offers sessions in tanning beds or spray on tans. She said she and staff work with clients to develop a program to meet their interests and needs. They determine how dark a tan they want and discuss issues like skin types and tanning experience. For example, someone who is very fair and will spend shorter time in a tanning bed than someone whose skin tone is darker or who already has a base tan.

In addition to tanning options, Tino also employs a technician available for head to toe or full body waxing as well as eyelash extensions.

Perhaps the most unique service of the salon is a red light bed. It is different from a typical tanning bed because it does not utilize UV rays. It offers many health benefits, according to Tino. For example, she said red light therapy helps stimulate collagen production which promotes skin elasticity. It also can improve blood circulation to tissue; reduce inflammation; improve wound healing; muscle recovery; reduce stretch marks; reduce symptoms associated with psoriasis, rosacea eczema or acne; improve scars and sun-damaged skin; and reduce wrinkles, fine lines and age spots.

At this time, most customers are looking to get and maintain a healthy, tanned look. Tino said that many people want to look tan all year long and that fact is already bringing clients to the business which opened in September. In addition to looking better, Tino says tanning can enhance mood and increase vitamin D levels. Among its benefits, vitamin D contributes to development of healthy bones in children and adults and can help prevent osteoporosis in older adults.

Speaking for herself, she said, “Tanning is more of a mood booster for me. I sit at a desk from early morning to dark, so I feel I just need the positive boost that a 20 minute session in a tanning bed gives me.”

She said tanning sessions two or three times a week for 12 to 20 minutes is equivalent to four hours gardening or a beach day on a sunny day.

The salon’s hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am – 9 pm; Saturday, 9 am- 8 pm; and Sunday, 10 am – 6 pm.

Price for a single tanning session is $7; red light therapy is $9. Clients also can purchase weekly or monthly packages for multiple tanning sessions, ranging from $11 a week to 45 a month for tanning sessions or 12.50 a week to $52 a month for red light therapy. Waxing or eyelash extensions are available by appointment evenings and weekends with prices ranging from $10-150. Tino said it generally takes eight weeks to gradually build up to the color many seek.
